This book is a work of fiction and bears no resemblance to any actual mayoral election or candidates in Portland, Oregon, or anywhere else. Portland mayors are elected in May, not in the November general election as this novel depicts, though run-off elections may continue until the general election.

Confessions of a Political Hack

Not all of Mike Dodger’s antics and anecdotes spring from his creator’s own involvement in political races (only those covered by the statute of limitations). He retells—and being Mike frequently embellishes—confessions and reminiscences from a wide variety of sources including The American Heritage History of the 20’s & 30’s, Jack Bass and Marilyn Thompson’s Ol’ Strom: An Unauthorized Biography of Strom Thurmond, Ronald Kessler’s Inside the White House, Jack Mitchell’s How to Get Elected: An Anecdotal History of Mud-Slinging, Red-Baiting, Vote-Stealing, and Dirty Tricks in American Politics, Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s Dirty Politics, Cormac O’Brien’s Secret Lives of the U.S. Presidents, Gerald Schomp’s Birchism Was My Business, and Bruce L. Felknor’s Dirty Politics. Edward Schwartzman’s Campaign Craftsmanship: A Professional’s Guide to Campaigning for Elective Office provided additional information about national politics, while Robert E. Burton’s Democrats of Oregon: The Pattern of Minority Politics, 1900-1956 and Jewel Lansing’s Portland: People, Politics, and Power, 1851-2001 assisted with local information.
